South Carolina authorities identify man killed by deputies

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Greenville County authorities have released the name of the man shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies after they say he yelled for them to kill him and pointed a rifle at them.

Greenville County Coroner Parks Evans told local media that 51-year-old Robert Morgan Garrison Jr. of Piedmont died from a gunshot wound to the head Tuesday evening.

Deputies were called to a disturbance and say a man was behaving erratically. They said Garrison came out of the home with a rifle yelling “kill me, kill me, kill me.”

Deputies said they fired when he pointed the gun at them.

Sheriff Steve Loftis said the man had refused repeated commands to drop the gun.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting. SLED spokesman Thom Berry said Garrison was white, as were the deputies involved.
