Columbus woman charged with cruelty for child’s burned feet

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) — Police in Columbus have charged a woman after finding second-degree burns on her toddler’s feet.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports (http://bit.ly/1JgFzoO ) 28-year-old Elouise Ebony Smallwood was arrested Sunday on charges of first-degree cruelty to children and reckless conduct. Police say her 2-year-old son is being treated for his burns.

Columbus police Lt. Joyce-Dent Fitzpatrick said officers discovered the burns when called to a disturbance at Smallwood’s home Sunday. She said the mother told officers her son got burned by walking on hot concrete, an explanation officers concluded wasn’t consistent with the child’s injuries.

Smallwood was scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing Wednesday. It was not immediately known if she had an attorney.
