Charleston added to suit over arts center construction

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The city of Charleston has been added to a lawsuit stemming from the construction of the most expensive municipal building in Charleston.

Local media outlets report that Skanska-Trident, which built the Gaillard Center, is seeking at least $20 million in damages from the defendants in including city, three architectural companies and a project management company.

The suit alleges the defendants caused delays and drove up the cost of the project.

The building had a total price tag of $142 million and was to have been finished last April but opened six months behind schedule.

The center replaces the old Gaillard Municipal Auditorium and is a venue for concerts and other performances and will be used for Spoleto Festival USA events.

A city attorney says the lawsuit has no merit.
