LONDON (NBC News) – Britain’s Prince Harry and American actress Meghan are engaged and will marry in the spring of 2018.
The announcement came Monday from the office of Prince Charles, Harry’s father.
Hours later, the couple spoke with BBC, describing the moment they got engaged earlier this month.
“It was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee,” Markle says.
Prince Harry says it was an instant ‘yes’ and his wife-to-be barely let him finish the question.
Just 18 months ago, the couple began their whirlwind romance. But as Prince Harry explains, it was love at first sight.
“The fact that I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly was confirmation to me that all the stars were aligned, everything was just perfect,” he says. “This beautiful woman just literally tripped and fell into my lap and I fell into her life.”
The announcement Monday says Markle has met Queen Elizabeth II, and Harry also received the blessing of Markle’s parents.
But the name on everyone’s lips is that of late Princess Diana, Prince Harry’s mother.
In the interview with BBC, Markle and Prince Harry both say they think she’s watching over them.
“I’m sure she’s with us, you know, jumping up and down somewhere else,” Prince Harry says.
In many ways, this future princess is carrying on the tradition of Princess Diana.
Markle is redefining what it means to be royal for the British public, and for people throughout the world.
