SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into an officer-involved shooting on Friday, Nov. 10.
Preliminary information from law enforcement agencies indicates that on Friday a GSP Trooper attempted a traffic stop on the driver of a white Nissan Altima in Chatham County.
The Altima failed to stop and a chase ensued. The Altima and the GSP Trooper wrecked at the on-ramp to Veteran’s Memorial Parkway from Chatham Parkway.
According to police, the driver of the Altima exited the vehicle, facing the trooper with a firearm. During the confrontation, the driver of the vehicle was shot by the trooper.
GSP and Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department officer rendered aid until EMS responded for medical treatment and transported the driver to Memorial University Medical Center.
He is listed in critical condition.
No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
At the request of the Georgia State Patrol, GBI is now conducting an independent investigation. Upon completion, the investigation will be turned over to the Eastern District Attorney’s Office for any action they deem appropriate.
