EFFINGHAM CO., Ga. (WSAV) – An investigation continues in Effingham County following an officer-involved shooting Tuesday afternoon on Highway 80 in Eden.
Vincent Thompson, 23, of Effingham County was shot by an Effingham County Sheriff’s Office deputy after he was lured into an undercover gun sale at Shyam Food Mart next to the Chevron gas station.
Thompson had several warrants out against him for selling illegal guns.
The Sheriff’s Office says Thompson was considered armed and dangerous and was “selling guns to our deputies as part of an undercover operation.”
At the same time, deputies were serving a search warrant where Thompson lived for years. ECSO reports during the search, more than 40 guns and tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition as well as drugs.
“That’s probably the most guns I’ve seen outside of a gun dealer. I don’t think I’ve seen that many guns in one house in my life and I’ve been doing for over 40 years,” Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie said.
Back at the gas station, undercover deputies and more officers made themselves known to Thompson. One deputy shot Thompson reportedly in the shoulder and hand with an AR-15. Several guns were found in Thompson’s white van and a gun was reportedly found lying on the ground where Thompson was parked at Pump 1 in the Chevron gas station.
No word yet on the number of shots fired, but it is confirmed that no deputies were injured.
Thompson was transported to Memorial. He was later released on Tuesday and was booked into the Effingham County Jail. He faces charged for felony criminal use of an article with an altered ID and theft by receiving stolen items. More charges may be pending.
All three guns Effingham County undercover deputies bought from Thompson over several months were found to be stolen, including one with the serial number filed off.
“We had a very coordinated effort going on here, trying to take the suspect into custody today,” says Gena Bilbo, ESCO.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has yet to release further details or security footage, but say witnesses are being cooperative.
