HARDEEVILLE, Sc. (WSAV) – The 2017 senior class of Royal Live Oaks Academy is the first to graduate from a charter school in Hardeeville. The class started with 25 eighth graders… five years later, 24 walked the stage together, one in spirit.
“Cody was our valedictorian of our senior class… we just miss him deeply, and I know, hes like looking down on us,” said Rickii Jenkins, a graduating senior at Royal Live Oaks Academy.
This past October, struggling with family and relationship problems, their classmate, Cody Lax, took his own life.
“I told him when he was sad that day, I was trying to tell him like listen man, we almost finished, we almost finished, once we out of here man, we gonna go do it together,” said senior James Pinckney.
“We grew up together since kindergarten, and he was one of my best friends since we was little,” said senior Martavin Singletary, “It was heat crushing because he was always one of the people that was there to make you laugh.”
“Some people that say that, you know, your life starts when you’re born, but me, my life started when Cody passed, it really opened my eyes,” said Pinckney.
The 24 are now off to make their mark in the world, many in Cody’s memory.
“I’m actually going into the air force,” said Jenkins, “Majority of our class wants to go into the air force so he kind of pushed us to go for the air force.”
“He always talked about going into air force, that was his dream,” said Jenkins.
“He’s in a better place and hes not suffering whatever he was going through, hes truly gonna be missed and it something we gonna have to keep moving forward and just try to keep going,” said Singletary.
One life short lived, but carried on through 24, forever.
