SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The shooting at Ft. Lauderdale Airport occurred a little before 1:00pm EST. Five people are confirmed killed with nine others injured (at the time of this report). Scott Isreal is the Broward County Sheriff in the state of Florida but – the FBI is leading the investigation.
The only shots confirmed at this time were at Terminal 2; the baggage area for the airport. There was some talk about a possible second active shooter but this has not been confirmed. It is too early to be pronounced as a terror attack.
The suspected shooter is in custody and is being questioned for motive. The type of weapon used in the incident has not yet been announced.
All airport operations have been suspended and it is unknown at this time when the airport will reopen.
CNN has reported the shooter to be Estaban Santiago. Reports state that Santiago checked into the airport from Alaska, got his baggage with his weapon, he declared the firearm, and then went into the bathroom — he came out of the bathroom and said, “Bathroom Shooting.”
At least 18 round were fired. Santiago had previously cleared a checked firearm through TSA.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say multiple people have died after a lone suspect opened fire at the Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, international airport.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office tweeted the information following Friday afternoon’s shooting.
Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief told CNN that authorities “have an active crime scene investigation involving terminal 2.”
Miami area television stations reported that at least six people were shot. News stations showed video of medics taking care of a bleeding victim outside the airport. News helicopters hovering over the scene showed hundreds of people standing on the tarmac as an ambulance drove by and numerous law enforcement officers, including tactical units, rushed to the scene.
Former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer tweeted that he was at the airport when shots were fired and “everyone is running.”
(CNN) Multiple people were killed in a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale airport, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office said on Twitter.
The gunman is in custody and was a lone shooter, Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief told CNN.
“We have no evidence at this time that he was acting with anyone else. He is currently in custody and we’re investigating,” Sharief said. Investigators are looking into the suspect’s motive, she said.
Aerial footage from CNN affiliates showed large groups of people standing outside on the tarmac.
Ft Lauderdale (NBC 6) – NBC 6 in Miami is reporting a gunman opened fire at Fort Lauderdale / Hollywood International Airport Friday afternoon, killing at least one person and injuring nine others, according to law enforcement.
The suspected gunman is reportedly in custody.
The shooting occurred inside the baggage claim inside Terminal 2.
No other details have been released at this time.
