SAVANNAH, Ga. – Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of the driver and deputy hurt in Friday night’s officer-involved shooting.
At approximately 5:45 p.m. Sergeant Raymond Heroux pulled Akeem Jenkins, 21, of Hilton Head over for a “routine traffic stop” in the parking lot of the Bluffton Tanger 2 outlets. After “observing suspicious activity” Heroux called in for backup. Sergeant Selena Nelson arrived at the scene a short time later.
According to the BCSO, during the traffic stop, Sergeant Heroux was “trapped in the open driver’s side door [of Jenkin’s car] and dragged through the parking lot” of the Nike outlet. It was then Heroux drew his pistol and shot Jenkins.
Both Heroux and Jenkins sustains injuries as a result of the traffic stop. Heroux was transported to Hilton Head Regional Medical Center where he was later released. While Emergency Medical Services were stabilizing Jenkins, they discovered “what appeared to be a substantial amount of cocaine” on him. He was then transferred to Savannah Memorial Hospital.
The scene was declared secure on Friday night as the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) took over the investigation. SLED agents determined the cocaine found was of a felony weight and obtained a warrant for Jenkin’s arrest. As of Saturday night, Jenkins remains in the hospital receiving treatments for his gunshot wounds. He will be charged by SLED agents when he is released from the hospital.
SLED is continuing to investigate the scene and the traffic stop.
