Weather Wise Kids: Why do meteorologists use math?

wwk

Ask any meteorologist and I’m sure they’ll tell you, science and math were their favorite subjects in school.  Math is used every day from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed. It’s often said that math is the universal language.

Meteorology students are required to take at least three semesters of Calculus, along with other math classes.

Math helps meteorologists understand how the atmosphere works.

Storm Team 3 uses several different weather computer models to help create the forecast for the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry.

Some of these computers are as big as your school bus!!

They are constantly collecting information, such as temperature, air pressure, moisture, and wind speed.

The computer takes all of that information and runs it through equations in order predict how the weather will change over time. Using math to predict the future of the atmosphere is called Numerical Weather Prediction.

The weather models often make mistakes, so it’s important for a meteorologist to understand how the computers work so they can create an accurate forecast.
