SAVANNAH, GA (WSAV/AP) – On Saturday, November 26, 2016 a local firefighter, Michael Curry, was laid to rest. Master Firefighter Curry died of aortic aneurysm on Nov. 19 while preparing to help people who fell in the Savannah River after a ferry boarding platform collapsed.
Family, friends, colleagues and city officials all attended the mass and walked behind a firetruck Saturday as it carried Curry’s body through the city where he served for almost 13 years.
His casket, draped in an American flag, was carried along a half-mile route from the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist to Savannah Fire headquarters.
Officials sounded the final bell and presented his son and his mother with the flag and Curry’s helmet.
