EDISTO BEACH, S.C. (AP) – A state park on the South Carolina coast that was hammered by Hurricane Matthew last month is reopening.
The state Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism announced that Edisto Beach State Park between Charleston and Beaufort reopens Friday.
The department said the beach front area for daily use, a highland campground, education center and boat ramp are all reopening. But the park’s oceanfront campground suffered heavy damage and is still undergoing repairs. That area is not expected to reopen until September.
In the adjacent town of Edisto Beach, Matthew pushed several feet of sand onto the beachfront avenue, destroyed an oceanfront home and clawed away at the foundations of numerous others.
