Oatland Island Wildlife Center still closed due to Hurricane

It’s a popular spot for nature lovers but Hurricane Matthew brought his wrath to the Oatland Island Wildlife Center.  Heather Merbs, who is the director at the center, says up to 50 trees fell.  “They were blocking the roads when we tried to come back after the storm,” she told us.

Merbs says in the past few weeks, they have been working to remove trees which have damaged walkways and other parts of many exhibits.

Merbs says she is hoping to reopen by Saturday, November 19 but says even then “not all areas will be ready for the public.”

She says they are working to make sure that areas that are made available to visitors are safe.
