Savannah, GA- Savannah’s medical community mourns the loss of a beloved doctor hit and killed while riding her bicycle over the weekend.
62 year old Deborah Wilkowski died Saturday while riding with friends on Highway 30 in Effingham County, about a half mile East of South Effingham High School.
Georgia State Patrol says 40 year old Dennis Lee Stuart was driving the pickup that hit Wilkowski.
Authorities say he left the scene, but turned himself in Sunday night.
Monday, friends and colleagues gathered at Memorial Health to share memories of Wilkowski.
“She was an amazing female role model, she made everybody practice medicine to the point of perfection,” says Dr. Steven Carpenter with Memorial Hospital.
Wilkowski practiced Anesthesiology for years in Savannah and taught at South University.
She retired just a few months ago and picked up another passion – bicycling.
Stuart faces charges of homicide by vehicle and leaving the scene of a crash.
