Hurricane Matthew continues to strengthen in the South-Central Caribbean Sea. As of 8 am Friday, maximum winds were up to 105 mph, making Matthew a Category 2 hurricane.
The storm was moving west-southwest at 14 mph, located about 130 miles northeast of Punta Gallinas, Colombia. It will likely become a major Category 3 storm either later today or sometime tomorrow, eventually turning north toward Cuba and the Bahamas by Wednesday of next week.
As of now, there is decent model agreement in this time frame that Matthew will move north from the Bahamas, but remain offshore, with no direct impacts in our area. However, strong rip currents and rough surf could still be a possibility. There is still plenty of time for details on Matthew’s track to change, so stay with Storm Team 3 through the weekend for further updates.
