At 11 am Matthew was 105 miles northeast of Punta Gallinas, Colombia and about 495 miles southeast of Kingston, Jamaica.
With wind speeds of 115 mph, Matthew is now a major Category 3 hurricane. The storm system is moving west southwest near 12 mph.
Matthew is expected to continue to move west today, with a gradual trend toward the north over the weekend. On the current forecast track Matthew will pass over the Guajira Peninsula later today and linger over the central Caribbean Sea through the rest of the weekend.
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Colombia/Venezuela border to Riohacha. Tropical storm force winds, life-threatening surf, and rip currents are expected in these areas. Plus, 2-4″ of rain, but isolated areas could pick up more.
