WILSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – A Wilson County man accused of breaking into several elementary schools and stealing money raised through fundraisers has been taken into custody.

Police believe Brain Howell targeted schools in both Wilson and Smith counties and gained access by forcing open windows or doors.

According to police, in addition to taking fundraiser money, Howell allegedly broke into vending machines. He also took the video surveillance storage devices from the schools.

He was identified and ultimately arrested after he left behind the video surveillance at a school in Carthage during a break-in that occurred late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

He was arrested at the Travel Inn in Lebanon. He was taken into custody and police said he confessed to burglaries at several schools, including Sam Houston Elementary, Tuckers Crossroads, three schools in Smith County and one in DeKalb County.

Howell is currently being held in the Wilson County jail on a $7,500 bond.
