The tropical wave tracking through the Windward Islands has acquired a closed low level circulation according to surface observations and hurricane hunter data… and tropical storm Matthew has formed.
At 11am… maximum sustained winds are around 60 mph. While strengthening may be limited today… low wind shear and warm water will lead to strengthening in the extended… and Matthew is expected to become a hurricane late this week. The storm is forecast to become a category 2 hurricane as it nears Jamaica in the northern Caribbean Sea Sunday night/Monday morning.
The storm is moving west swiftly around 21 mph… and this general track with some slower forward motion is expected over the next couple of days. The storm will impact the Windward Islands through this afternoon… then pull away and move across the eastern Caribbean Sea for the next couple of days.
Here is the latest visible satellite imagery of Matthew…..
