The Heritage Classic Foundation announced Thursday it is taking steps to make the annual RBC Heritage golf tournament more sustainable.
The goal is to earn sustainability certification from the Golf Environment Organization.
As part of the process, the GEO conducted a review of the tournament.
Officials said the highlights included nearly 19 tons of waste that was recycled and more than 22,000 spectators who used the shuttle busses instead of their cars to attend the event. But, the review found recommended a more abitious waste reduction target than the 20 percent accomplished.

The RBC Heritage takes place in April at the Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island.
