HAMPTON COUNTY, S.C. – A former school resource officer in Hampton County was sentenced Wednesday for sexually assaulting a student.
55-year-old Larry Heyward was charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct, engaging in a lewd act with a minor and misconduct in office by a public official. He was found guilty after a three day trial, according to officials with the fourteenth judicial circuit.
Heyward, a deputy with the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office, was assigned to Estill Middle School and began assaulting a male student there.
The student recorded an explicit phone conversation between himself and Heyward which was used as a key piece of evidence in the trial.
Heyward was sentenced to 15 years and prison. He will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
