BREAKING NEWS: Violent protests in Charlotte, state of emergency declared

CORRECTION: Charlotte Police sent out a tweet saying that the gunshot victim is in critical condition and on life support, not dead as previously reported.

The governor of North Carolina has declared a state of emergency following the violent protests.  State Troopers and National Guard are assisting Charlotte police.

BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: That gunshot victim has passed away. Neither the victim nor the suspect is believed to be a police officer.  Police have used tear gas on the crowds.


CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Officials: One person taken to hospital in Charlotte with life-threatening injuries from apparent gunshot wound.

The emergency medical service in Charlotte says a person has been taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries from an apparent gunshot wound.

Charlotte Medic tweeted that the person was injured Wednesday night but didn’t give details.

The service says it has taken eight patients – seven law-enforcement officers and one civilian – to area hospitals during protests over the police shooting of a black man.
