SAVANNAH, GA – (WSAV) Just when you think you’ve heard it all – thieves are now targeting birthday cards that may have cash or gift cards inside. The crimes may have gone unsolved until certain clues came to their attention.
Surveillance video capturing Dylan Moses using a stolen gift card at a Target store helped uncover a $30,000 mail theft case.
Linda Culbertson, the mother of twin sons, sent her children gift cards for their birthday. Only one of the sons received their gift. The card had been stolen. Linda and her son were not the only victims. A witness’ report of a van dumping items wrapped in blue shrink wrap lead to a postal inspector investigation. The shrink wrap contained several pieces of stolen mail. The shrink wrap linked the crime to a larger case involving 400 victims and $30,000 in stolen cards.
The postal inspector recommends taking mail like birthday cards directly to the post office.
Inspectors arrested Dylan Moses in the case. He was sentenced to three months in jail and 3 years’ probation.
