1 injured in New York Avenue shooting, SCMPD investigating

SAVANNAH, Ga.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are investigating a shooting that sent one man to the hospital on Saturday night.

The incident happened in the 2500 block of New York Avenue around 8:00 p.m., according to police.

The adult male who was shot is now being identified as DeAndre Newton, 30. He was taken to Memorial University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Only a few hours before the shooting– police say they were called to the same home for a ‘disorderly person’ report, involving Newton and female victim, but Newton ran away from the home before police arrived.

Detective believe the shooting may be connected to the earlier incident at Newton’s home.

SCMPD says that this shooting does not appear to be a random act.

Police say they are still working to confirm the identity of the suspect, but they are also looking for Newton’s brother-in-law for questioning. His name is Bilal Henderson. He’s described as a black male, 5’5” tall, weighing about 150 pounds. Henderson also has dreadlocks, gold teeth, and drivers a silver, Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
