SCMPD response to Labor Day Weekend gun violence

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police

SAVANNAH, GA (September 5, 2016): From Saturday, Sept. 3 through 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 5, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division launched investigations into seven shooting incidents, with a possibility of at least six targeted victims. These shootings have resulted in at least one homicide and one critical injury.

Preliminary investigations suggest that most of these weekend shootings were not random acts of violence. Several of these shootings involved acquaintances and known to known individuals, while others involved risky behavior, youth(s) illegally possessing a firearm(s) or repeat gun violators.  Most of these acts of gun violence allegedly happened in areas where SCMPD historical data reveals greater occurrences of violent crime as compared to the overall jurisdiction.

Detectives assigned to the SCMPD’s Criminal Investigations Division are dedicating long working hours and diligence to solving these cases.  Significant progress is being made in some of the cases, largely due to citizens willing to take a stance against this type of violence in their neighborhoods.  Despite hurdles such as uncooperative victims, detectives and patrol officers are confident that they will prevail in the investigations.

Ridding this community of violence is a shared responsibility. The SCMPD extends gratitude to citizens who support their public safety and the police department by sharing information.  The SCMPD asks that more neighbors of the Savannah-Chatham community come forward to help improve their public safety.

Citizens are urged to utilize available resources, such as the SCMPD tipline and CrimeStoppers, to relay the vital information needed to bring justice in this weekend’s and in all instances of violence. The SCMPD tip line can be reached by dialing (912) 525-3124. Information may be forwarded to CrimeStoppers at (912) 234-2020. Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.
