Caution flags up at Hilton Head beaches as storm approaches

Hilton Head Island, SC (WSAV) – Yellow caution flags waved along a windy Coligny Beach on Hilton Head Wednesday in an effort to keep swimmers on high alert.
Mike Wagner, Operations Manager for Shore Beach Service, said lifeguards were telling swimmers not to go any deeper than their waists, though most were not going past ankle-deep water anyway.
Wagner added they are talking to beachgoers about the dangers of rip-currents and how to make it through one.
There was a steady crowd braving the windy conditions throughout the morning, though many were struggling to put up umbrellas and chairs.
Meanwhile, Karyn Seley at Spinnaker Resorts said calls were starting to come in from vacationers, wondering if they should cancel their reservations.
Seley is telling callers they can reschedule.
“I also tell them I’ve lived on this island 30 years and only had to evacuate three times,” Seley said.
