Tropical Depression Nine: 11pm Tuesday Update

Savannah area still in the direct path of forecast track.

Depression getting better organized as it drifts slowly north-northwestward.

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for parts of Florida:  Anclote River to Indian Pass.  A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for parts of Florida:  west of Indian Pass to the Walton/Bay County Line.

At 11pm, the center of Tropical Depression Nine was about 415 miles southwest of Tampa, Florida, latitude 24.3 north, longitude 87.8 west.  The depression is moving toward the north-northwest near 2 mph.  A turn toward the north-northeast is forecast to begin Wednesday afternoon or evening.

On the forecast track, the center will approach the northwest Florida coast in the watch area on Thursday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts.  Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and the depression is expected to become a tropical storm on Wednesday.

For now, Savannah is in the direct path of the forecast track.  On this track, we will feel the main impacts of the storm late Thursday and into Friday.  These impacts include…  High Risk of Rip Currents for all coastal areas, Possible Coastal Flooding during high tide, a Storm Surge of 1-2 ft mainly for flood prone areas, Winds of 40-50 mph sustained with gusts up to 60 mph, heavy rain ~ coastal areas picking up as much as 3-5 inches and 1-2 inches inland, Flash flooding possible, isolated tornadoes, and marine impacts…  seas of 5 to 10 ft nearshore and 10 to 15 ft offshore beyond 20 nm.
