Tropical Storm Gaston has strengthened this morning and is close to becoming a hurricane. Maximum winds were 70 mph as of 5 am Wednesday, just 4 mph shy of a category 1 hurricane. No question it will become a hurricane later today, but the good news is it will remain a fish storm, staying safely over the Central Atlantic through the next 5 days.
The storm was located about 1,000 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands, moving west-northwest at 17 mph. Gaston will likely turn more toward the northwest later today.
