Elderly man killed in fire at southside gas station

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah Fire officials released a statement on the fire that left one person dead and another in the hospital.

Police confirm, 87-year-old James Lester was killed after losing control of his vehicle after a traffic accident on Bull Street late Tuesday morning. Lester’s SUV crossed through the parking lot of a BP gas station, hitting a pump and sparking the fire.

Additional personnel was called in to help and emergency crews were able to extinguish the fire with a combination of foam and water.  The outside of the building received some heat damage, but the inside of the store was undamaged.   One employee and one customer were inside the business during the fire.  The employee was able to get out, but firefighters needed to escort the customer to safety.

Southside EMS says one other person was treated and taken to Memorial Hospital.

Roads around the gas station were closed for several hours.

Savannah Fire Investigators along with SCMPD’s Major Accident Investigation Team continue to investigate the incident.

The owner of the Chu’s convenience store provided water to the working firefighters.
