ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – A popular navigation app has a new feature that could help save lives.
The Waze app has come up with a way to try and prevent hot car deaths.
Waze is a popular traffic and navigation app but a new feature could be a lifesaver. It’s called the child reminder alert.
It sends a notification to your phone when it thinks your trip is over to check the car for children and pets before you leave.
The alerts can also be customized to say whatever you want them to and can easily be turned on and off.
Paige Carner is a single mother in Roswell and says while she could never imagine forgetting about her 3-year-old, people do get busy and the alert is a good idea.
“I personally like to think that it wouldn’t happen if you have multiple kids, a lot is going on, but I think it’s a great app to help prevent these deaths,” said Carner.
Twenty-six kids have already died this year after being left in a hot car.
“I’ve heard about it happening and about some of the kids dying and stuff so that’s really scary,” Ann Dunn, Roswell resident. “It’s a good idea, it might help a lot of people.”
The new child reminder feature is only undergoing a testing period right now but is available in New Mexico.
