SEBASTIAN COUNTY, Ar. (KHBS/KHOG-TV) – Law enforcement are trying to capture a suspect who shot the Hackett Police Chief and a deputy in Sebastian County this morning.
The Sebastian County Sheriff’s Department identified the suspect as Billy Jones of Greenwood. He was described as having negative feelings towards law enforcement. The situation began when law enforcement went to serve a warrant.
Neighbors told 40/29 News they know Billy Jones and his family, and they own a large number of weapons at their home. Neighbors also said there is a strip pit behind the home.
The shooting happened near Highway 253, in the area where Boone and Mockingbird Lane are. Law enforcement is asking people to stay away from the area.
Officers are at the property of the suspected shooter, but the shooter is not in custody, Pevehouse said.
The chief and the deputy were brought by ambulance to Sparks Medical Center, a hospital official confirmed. The hospital would not release information on the condition of the two.
A police chaplain arrived at Sparks Medical Center, law enforcement told 40/29 News. Other law enforcement is also at the hospital.
Crawford County Sheriff Ron Brown is responding with deputies for assistance. The Crawford County SWAT is also responding, as are deputies with the Scott County Sheriff’s Department. Logan County deputies are also responding.
Sebastian County EMS and Fort Smith EMS are on standby on the scene.
