BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C.- Beaufort County Deputies made an arrest in a case that’s remained unsolved for the last 36 years.
In the early morning hours of January 6th 1980, Beaufort County Deputies were dispatched to a dirt path off Old Salem Point Road. There they found an 18-year-old man shot to death and a juvenile female who’d been the victim of a sexual assault.
The juvenile victim said she and her boyfriend had parked on the dirt road when a man walked up and fired several shots into the vehicle, before robbing and sexually assaulting her. The boyfriend, David Krulewicz, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies looked into the case for years and it eventually grew cold due to limited forensic technology.
Fortunately, a DNA profile of an unknown man had been collected when the female victim was examined. It was entered into the Combined DNA Index System in 2003.
13 years later, 63-year-old Isaiah Gadson Jr. of Burton gave DNA for an unrelated case from June of 2016. It was entered into the database and it matched the DNA collected 36 years before.
Warrants were obtained warrants for Murder, Criminal Sexual Conduct, Kidnapping, and Armed Robbery. Gadson was located at the Beaufort Police Department and cold case detectives charged him and transported him to the Beaufort County Detention Center.
