CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga (WSAV) – Around 12 AM this morning Chatham County Marine Patrol along with Savanah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Aviation Unit and other law enforcement responded to a missing person’s report.

Family members of the man, who had gone swimming off Butterbean Beach yesterday, reported that he had failed to return home last night.

Marine Patrol and other law enforcement assets searched until approximately 1:30 AM and then suspended the search until daylight.

After resuming the search this morning officers were notified by a passing car that they saw someone covered in mud in the marsh. When confronted by officers the swimmer walked to officers. The swimmer was unharmed and stated that he decided to spend the night on the marsh and was unaware that law enforcement was searching for him.

The Marine Patrol unit would like to take this opportunity to remind swimmers and boaters to contact family and/or friends when their plans change and they will not be returning at their scheduled time.
