CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Admitted Emanuel AME Church shooter Dylann Roof now wants to waive his right to a federal jury trial.
The motion was filed in federal court on Thursday, June 6. In the motion, it says Roof is willing to waive a jury, and be tried and sentenced by the judge.
It goes on to say prosecutors have told the defense they would not consent to waiving the jury in this case.
Chief U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel had set November 7 as the day to begin selecting jurors for the federal trial of Dylann Roof.
Roof faces numerous federal counts, including hate crimes, in the June 17 shootings. Both state and federal prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
