More details on shooting and standoff on Abercorn Street

Kurt Meyers is accused of shooting and killing Brian Heckman on June 2

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah Police released more details in Thursday’s shooting turned standoff in the 2400 block of Abercorn Street.

The victim, 57-year-old Brian Heckman was a neighbor of his alleged shooter Kurt Meyers (34).

Police say the two men lived next door to each other and Meyer’s relatives say the suspect has a history as a mental health consumer, sustaining himself through certain disability benefits.

Investigators are still trying to find the motive for the shooting, but say it may stem from Meyers’ “perceptions.”

When SWAT made contact with Meyers, he seemed unaware that he needed to leave the building and surrender to police.
