Demetris Robertson Wins 63rd Ashley Dearing Award

Savannah, GA – Five star athlete and Savannah Christian senior, Demetris Robertson was awarded the 63rd Ashley Dearing Award today, Wednesday May 11th, in front of the student body. The Dearing Award is given to a male athlete who excels in the classroom and at three sports. Robertson played football, basketball and ran track and field during his high school career. Mrs. Dearing was at the ceremony and spoke to WSAV and said, that before her husband passed away she promised him she would continue this award.



Savannah Christian Preparatory School’s Demetris Robertson grabs the 63rd Ashley Dearing Award

The 63rd Ashley Dearing Award Winner has been grabbed by Savannah Christian Preparatory School senior Demetris Robertson. The Ashley Dearing award is given to the top three varsity sport male athlete in Savannah. It has become one of the most prestigious awards given to a male prep athlete since its inception in 1953.

All nominations must have played varsity football, varsity basketball and a varsity spring sport during the school year. This year Demetris marks the 63rd recipient to a long list of outstanding three sport athletes from Savannah Georgia. Robertson becomes the ninth Savannah Christian Preparatory School athlete to receive this award. The first Raider to win the Ashley Dearing Award was Mark Grainger in 1977. Finishing tied for second in the balloting, were senior Rajah Bush from Sol C. Johnson High School and junior John Wesley Kennedy of Benedictine and in third place was senior Ben Heusseler also of Savannah Christian Preparatory School.

Demetris excelled on the gridiron, rushing for 1043 yards on 107 carries scoring 13 touchdowns, 9 rushing touchdowns, one receiving, two punt returns, and one kickoff return. On defense, he was in on 41 tackles (27 solos) and had two interceptions. As a basketball player Robertson led the Raider team to a state playoff appearance as he was the leading scorer averaging 14.9 points per game and rebounds with 7.5 per game. Demetris’s talent has continued on the track so far this year with the top time in Class A Private division in the 200 meters with a time of 21.27, the top jump in the Long Jump with a distance of 23 feet 7inches and has the seconded fastest time in the 100 meters with a speed of 10.55.

The voting consisted of all athletic directors of Savannah Area High Schools that play football. Furthermore, the local Media, Savannah Morning News Sports Reporter Dennis Knight, WJCL Sports Director Frank Sulkowski, WTOC Sports Director Ken Griner, WSAV Sports Team Kim Sears & Greg Tolbott (one vote per media outlet), and ESPN Coastal General Manager/ESPN Savannah Radio AM 1400 & FM 104.3 On-Air Personality Air Personality Kevin Thomas. The Ashley Dearing Award will be presented in early May. A date and time will be announced later per Savannah Christian Preparatory School.
