SAVANNAH, GA (WSAV-TV) – It is a Mother’s day filled with sorrow for one family as gun violence robs them of a loved one.
A 43 year old woman is dead after being shot in Savannah Saturday night.
It happened along Ash and 54th streets around 8:45.
As Kathy Henry’s out-of-town family makes their way to Savannah, loved ones here are remembering the mother and grandmother.
“She was a great woman, she lived here her entire life. There’s not many people that I can say, from the east side of Savannah that do not know who Kathy Henry is,” says Richard Schmidt, Henry’s ex husband.
Metro police are searching for who killed Henry. She leaves behind children and grandchildren mourning on Mother’s day.
“I have no idea why our Lord called her home. I have no idea why the Devil does what he does, I think if we figured that out we’d live in a perfect world, but until then we have to put our faith in the police department that they’re going to do their job, they’re going to do it diligently and they’re going to bring her murderer to justice,” says Schmidt.
Henry’s death is the 22nd homicide in Savannah this year. Those who knew and loved her say they will neither remember her as another statistic nor how she died, but they will hold on to the memories of the life she lived.
“She lived life to the fullest I can tell you that and it was just snuffed out a little too early.”
Richard Schmidt and Henry have one son. Schmidt says he advised police to trace Henry’s phone in hopes that it will lead to her killer.
As his and her family grapple with this violent death, Schmidt asks that if anyone heard or saw anything, to speak up to help them gain closure.
“We’ll see her again, I have no doubt in my mind that we will see her again.”
