On-line Visitation for Chatham Inmates Up and Running

Being behind bars is tough enough, but being away from family makes it even harder.

Now the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is trying to make seeing an inmate’s loved ones a little easier.

A cell phone is all you need now to connect with someone behind bars.

Its part of a new online program that allows you to log in from home to connect to a prisoner

The hope is visits will take some of the pressure off of the Chatham County Jail Visitation Center, which currently sees 600 to as many as 1000 people each day looking to connect with their loved ones.

Now twice a day those same folks can also log on, sign in, put in a credit card and set up a time and a visitation session right from home.

Jail officials say for folks from out of town it allows more contact. Those visits, whether at the jail or online make a difference for the inmates behavior.

“Visitation would ring for the officer in the dorm to hear that and they know its coming on the kiosk so they know they already have a visit,” said Cpl Gwendolyn Young of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office. “So they aren’t going to act up because they know they are getting that and they know we can take that away from them at any time, so they are going to calm down.”

Families say it better for them too.

“I think its very important because she doesn’t really have anyone. So i’m trying to support her,” explains Kimberly Walker. “It brings joy to me to let her know she has someone so its important to me.”

The online visits run from 9am to 9pm every day. You can log in online twice every day and come to the Visitation center twice a day too.

It costs 40 cents a minute or $8 for 20 minutes.

While Monday was the first day, we did find the system was having some problems.

Sheriff’s say two dozen of more folks did try to connect online with limited success.

Sheriff’s say they hope to have those problems worked out soon.
