CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – Bowing to cadet pressure, The Citadel will allow cadets with concealed weapons permits to keep their personal guns in their cars.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that the military college’s Board of Visitors last weekend voted to suspend its code of regulations and instead recognize state law that allows all state permit carriers to keep their weapons locked in their vehicles.

The move comes in the wake of a cadet last month publicly asking South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley during a speaking visit to use her influence to get the school’s policy changed. Cadet Austin Lee told the governor that more than 1,100 cadets had signed a petition supporting the shift.

A spokeswoman for Gov. Haley says the governor supported the outcome of the gun effort.
