According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a woman and infant are in serious condition after a Wednesday morning crash in St. Helena. Jasmine Polite, 22, of Beaufort, was driving a vehicle south on Fripp Point Road at 11:17 a.m., when a tire blew out and she swerved off the road to left, according to Trooper Matt Southern.

Southern says it was a single vehicle crash. When the vehicle ran off the roadway, it went airborne and struck a culvert pipe. When emergency first-responders got to the scene, the car was found flipped, sitting on the driver side and roof. He says Polite was not wearing a seat belt; Southern says she was extricated and taken to Beaufort Memorial, then flown by air ambulance to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

The infant, a 4-month-old, was also flown to MUSC with serious injuries. Southern says the child had been in a car seat, but the seat is believed to have been improperly secured in the car, causing it to likely have been thrown about the vehicle before being ejected.
