TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WSAV-TV)- It’s possible neighbors on Tybee Island may have only had a taste of Orange Crush this weekend.
It showed as crowds proved to be much smaller than in years past for the unorganized beach bash.
the idea of two orange crush weekends was on the radar of tybee police and leaders all year.
A lower than normal turnout this weekend could mean people are choosing which weekend to come to Tybee. City leaders are skeptical there will be a second beach bash.
“It’s not uncommon every year that seems to be the case where there’s future events whether it’s the following week or some other time in the summer and for the most part none of those have panned out but we are obviously doing everything we can to plan for that contingency, ” says Mayor Jason Buelterman.
In fact it is pretty common, last year, flyers for “Peachfest” flew around during Orange Crush, but no real event took place that summer. Although it was a calmer spring break event overall, there still was a need for the aid from dozens of out of town law enforcment.
“Things changed this year in the sense that we’re paying these folks to be here and we’re lucky that so many of them were willing to take us up on the offer to come out and help tybee out,” the mayor adds.
Tybee Island police are preparing for another possible spring break event next weekend, but just like this crush, they are going on a guess of how many partiers will hit the beach.
“It’s hard because it’s hard to plan for something that is a pop up event essentially and this was the weekend that we were prepared for,” Bueltermanadding that when it comes down to it, “we’ve heard about this multiple week thing in years past so we’ll see what happens.”
