KIAWAH ISLAND, SC (WCBD) — The United States Coast Guard confirms Logan Brown, 21, was found alive on Sunday, April 10, after he was reported overdue for a return from a kayak excursion on Saturday, April 9. The Deputy Director of Folly Beach Public safety reports Brown is in good condition with minor injuries. On Monday, April 11, the Coast Guard and local authorities suspended their search for Dean Britt.
Crews did find Britt’s kayak in the middle of the search area.
The Coast Guard, along with members of Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Folly Beach Fire and Police Departments, conducted the search in the area between Folly Beach and Morris Island Lighthouse. On Monday, the search area almost doubled from 1,300 mile area to 2,700 mile area.
A friend of the kayakers notified watch-standers in the Coast Guard Sector Charleston command center of the situation, at approximately 9:40 p.m. Saturday. The initial report stated the two departed Folly Beach at approximately 1 p.m., and planned to kayak to Morris Island Lighthouse. Both kayakers were expected back before sunset.
Crews aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Facility Charleston and a 45-foot Response Boat—Medium from Coast Guard Station Charleston were deployed to search for the missing kayakers. The search is now considered a recovery mission and in the hands of Charleston DNR.
