(WKRG — GRAND BAY, ALABAMA) — Mobile Police have confirmed the undercover MPD officer shot twice early this morning in Grand Bay is in STABLE CONDITION. The suspect, News 5 has learned, is currently in CRITICAL CONDITION.

News 5 is told the shooting occurred shortly after midnight near the I-10 exit in Grand Bay. We’re told it was an undercover narcotics operation that took a turn for the worse when shots were fired between the officer and the suspect.

             STORY HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Undercover MPD Officer shot twice in Grand Bay, now in stable condition
  • Shooting was part of a reported narcotics bust, when the suspect and the officer exchanged gunfire
  • Suspect is in critical condition at USA Medical Center.

Mobile Police say the officer shot is a member of MCSENT — Mobile County Street Enforcement Narcotics Team.  The gas station is not in Mobile’s jurisdiction, but according to the police department, the MCSENT unit has different jurisdiction rules since some deputies with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office work on this undercover team.

A News 5 photographer on the scene did see a body being put into a bag but no deaths have been reported.

Witnesses say it appears to be an undercover drug operation wrong. Witnesses say the suspect was meeting people behind the restaurant when undercover police officers turned their car lights on.  The suspect attempted to flee on a motorcycle.  He was chased to a nearby gas station where the shooting happened.

“And then all of the sudden the SUV turned on blue lights and then two cars came from the back of the parking lot and the cops followed em, backed up went out there and so they chased him to the gas station across the street,” said a witness at the Waffle House that did not want us to use her name or show her face.  “[The suspect] wrecked his motorcycle and the next thing we know 4 more cops show up, 5 more cops show up, 19 cops, fire department it was crazy!”

This is a developing story.
