HILTON HEAD, S.C. – School board members voted Friday to change bell times for Hilton Head Island schools.
Beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, all district elementary and PreK-8 schools will start class at 8:00am.
Middle and high schools will start at 9:00am.
This is in response to numerous scientific studies that show sleep deprived adolescent students often suffer mental and physical health problems.
Researchers believe hormonal changes make it difficult for these students to go to sleep earlier in the night.
Superintendent Jeff Moss says, “We focus on student learning and student health, and the research is very clear that teens benefit from later start times.”
Hilton Head Island High School moved its starting time from 7:45 to 8:35 a.m. in a pilot initiative that began two years ago, and school officials said that the results have been positive.
