The Beaufort County School Board voted this week to adjust the start times for its schools, having elementary students start earlier than those in middle and high school.
With the exception of Hilton Head Island Schools, which have already made the change, the district’s elementary schools will begin classes about 8 a.m. and high schools about 9 a.m. Something officials say they believe will boost learning.
“There’s research, a lot of research that shows that kids do better once they get to their teens if they get up later in the morning.”
The district’s been piloting this at the Hilton Head schools and so far its working, less late arrivals, less absences, less discipline referrals, and better academic performance.
The time changes will take effect in August.
