12-year-old hiker killed by falling boulder in New York

Greenwich 6th grader was killed during a hike with his uncle when a boulder tumbled down 100 ft. and Connor was pinned against a tree.

KEENE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Police say a 12-year-old hiker was killed by a giant rock that fell at the Roaring Brook Falls in the Town of Keene.

Police say on March 13 they responded to a report of a hiker that had been killed by a falling boulder at the Roaring Brook Falls on State Route 73.

The investigation revealed that the victim, 12 year-old Connor McLaughlin from Greenwich had gone on an impromptu hike with a family member to look at the falls. While exploring a boulder became loose naturally from the area next to the top of the falls and fell about 100 feet, striking the boy and killing him.

Assisting at the scene were the New York State Forest Rangers, Department of Environmental Conservation, Essex County Sheriff’s Office, and the Keene and Keene Valley Fire Departments.
