The Harlem Globetrotters are officially on their 2016 World Tour–
And they’ll be here in town tomorrow — celebrating their 90th year wowing fans on the court.
News 3’s Courtney Cole had the pleasure of speaking to one of the world-record-making players and says she learned that there’s a lot more to being a Harlem Globetrotter than what you see on the court.
It’s a tune we’ve all grown to love…because we know what happens next-The Harlem Globetrotters take the court!
And with 30 of them on the team, and hours of practice before show time-it’s never a dull moment.
One of those talented players is Anthony Blakes–better known on the court as “Buckets Blakes.”
“…My coaches and teammates call me ‘Buckets’, because I can score a lot of baskets in a hurry and it’s very very fitting because-I’m now in the Guinness Book of World Records. I actually held the record for the most underhand half-court shots in one minute,” said Blakes.
And that would be 6 shots in 46 seconds by the way….but Blakes says the best shot he ever took was seizing the opportunity to join this legendary team.
“…It’s given me the opportunity to see the world. I’ve been to 79 countries, I’m on my third passport, and the best thing about being a Harlem Globetrotter is getting the opportunity to make people laugh and smile.”
Something Blakes says he and his teammates are working on on-and-off the court.
“Our whole goal is to get 100 million smiles in the next 10 years out of our fans all over the world. And the best way we can do that is our community outreach programs,” Blakes told News 3.
…Which he says focuses on bullying prevention and improving the health of his younger fans.
“I think it’s very important for us to get out into the community because kids look up to us.”
Especially in a place like Savannah, where Blakes says the Globetrotters are more than just ball players–
“…There’s a Globetrotter culture here that can’t wait until we come back every year…and so when we do come back, we know we’re always welcome.”
And so to embrace the culture, I asked Buckets to show me a few things.
Buckets: “We’re going to work on some globetrotter passes and you’re going to duplicate it..”
Courtney Cole: “Okay…”
We started off with what was supposed to be some of the easier tricks…but it wasn’t quite as easy as it looks!
Courtney Cole: “Hold on, you have to show me that one more time!”
And with tricks that seemed to incorporate more of my body parts than I could control at once-there were several misses!
But once I finally caught on-it was nothing but net!
Even though I might not have what it takes to make the team–
Blakes definitely delivered on their promise–as there was certainly enough laughter and smiles to go around.
The Harlem Globetrotters will visit more than 200 cities, 49 states and 9 Canadian Provinces on their tour.
