Beginning March 14, DuBois Park playground area in Bluffton, S.C. will be closed for installation of synthetic turf on the premises. The closure date could be changed depending on weather conditions. According to a release from the Public Information Officer Debbie Szpanka, Churchich Recreation and Design will be removing mulch and installing 4,500 sq. ft. of synthetic turf on the playground area only. The turf will be 100% non-toxic and lead-free, and will have a look and feel like real grass. An additional feature to the turf is a porous foam base system to provide softer impact, increase efficient drainage and withstand wear and tear. The material within the turf is called HydroChill and the coated sand provides a cooling system that will, in turn, help the surface temperature of the turf remain cool, especially in the summer.
By replacing the mulch with synthetic turf it will provide the Town cleaner material for children and reduce maintenance cost. A Park and Recreation Department Fund grant, administered through the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, is funding $48,000 of the approximately $63,400 project.
