5th Annual GnomeCon invites gamers, Sci-fans to Downtown Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga.

Folks throughout Savannah are preparing for a  one-of-a-kind Science Fiction and and gaming experience happening all weekend long!

It’s known as GnomeCon the doors open on Friday morning, but News 3’s Courtney Cole is giving us a sneak-peek at the show!

“Okay, so you’ve probably heard of things like Dragoncon and Comicon–Gnomecon is the Savannah-sized version of that.”

Sheala Bacon, the Vice President of The Board of GnomeCon, says  it’s a place where gamers, science fiction fans –and anyone looking to have good clean fun– can unite!

“Gnomecon originally started as a board gaming convention, so we have a lot of board games-other kinds of games like role-playing games…the most popular which is ‘Dungeons and Dragons’, but then we started expanding out and we started getting guests,” Bacon told News 3.

And some pretty famous ones will be in the house this weekend, like: Dreamworks animator Scott Wright, who’s also a SCAD professor, along with Gigi Edgely who you may recognize from the science-fiction series Farscape—and many more!

There’s also gaming, demonstrations, and of course one of the most memorable parts of the convention-all of the costumes!

…And as  you can see, people really go all out!

“And it’s amazing! and in the past we’ve had a real Chewbacca, and sometimes we end up with storm troopers and all kinds of stuff,” Bacon said.

And with so much stuff to choose from, Bacon tells me there’s really only one way to have a good time…

“I think just do a little bit of everything…it’s kind of like going to a buffet-taste it out…”

And while all of the “tasting” is certainly entertaining…it’s giving back to the community that Bacon says she enjoys most …

“The majority of our proceeds go to the library…so last year I believe we donated $2,000.00 to our local library system and we like to say that all good geeks start with a book…”
