West Savannah fire displaces one, Cause unknown

SAVANNAH, GA (February 26, 2016) – Savannah Fire & Emergency Services firefighters battled a house fire on this city’s westside late Friday morning.

Firefighters attacked the blaze just after 11:30 a.m. at 236 Cumming St. They encountered heavy smoke and flames at the single story, block house and contended with the fire for about 20 minutes before bringing it under control.

Savannah Fire investigators say it appears the fire started in a bedroom on the right side of the house and extended into the attic. From there, the flames broke through the roof.

The house sustained extensive fire, smoke and water damage and the neighborhood was blanketed with heavy smoke until the fire was extinguished.

One person was displaced due to the blaze. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire and SFES investigators continue their efforts to determine an exact cause of the fire.
