UPDATE: The standoff with the suspect has ended. The suspect was found dead inside of the home with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
(BERKELEY COUNTY, SC) — A female Berkeley County Sheriff’s Deputy is shot in the line of duty overnight. She is currently being treated at a nearby hospital. Multiple agencies are working a standoff situation on Bexley Street in North Charleston, where that suspect is being held up.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office reports, at 12:38 a.m. Friday, a female deputy was reporting an arrest in Goose Creek. After the attempted arrest took place, there was a scuffle and officials lost contact via radio with the deputy on scene.
They say she was wearing body armor when she was shot multiple times. The details on the number of times shot and where have not been released.
Chief Deputy Mike Cochran has confirmed that there were rounds discharged from the deputy’s gun. He believes the deputy’s name will be released sometime Friday morning.
Spencer Pryor with the North Charleston Police Department says the suspect entered a home on Bexley Street where three people were sleeping. The three people got out of the residence and have told police that the suspect is injured and bleeding. Hostage negotiators are on the scene of the standoff and officials are working to resolve the standoff safely and as quickly as possible.
